Things to Do in Chikmagalur: The Complete Guide

Cradled in the Western Ghats, Chikmagalur is where coffee first took root in India — a landscape of mist-wrapped peaks, plantation trails and tumbling waterfalls. Here's how to spend your days, drawn from a decade of hosting guests on our estate.

Climb Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak

At around 1,930 metres, Mullayanagiri is the tallest peak in Karnataka and the headline trek of the region. A winding road takes you most of the way; a short, steep climb of stone steps leads to the small summit shrine and a panorama of ridgelines rolling into cloud. Go at dawn for the famous sea of mist. It's roughly 30 km from Chikmagalur town — an easy day trip from the estate.

Walk the Baba Budangiri range

This horseshoe of hills is steeped in history — it's said the saint Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee beans here from Yemen, planting the seed of Indian coffee. Today the range offers gentle ridge walks, the Manikyadhara waterfall and a revered shrine. The drive up through shola forest and grassland is reason enough to come.

Chase waterfalls: Hebbe, Kemmangundi & Jhari

Near the hill station of Kemmangundi, Hebbe Falls drops in two tiers through dense coffee and spice plantations — reached by a jeep ride and a short walk. Kemmangundi itself has manicured gardens and the Z-Point sunset viewpoint, while the Jhari (Buttermilk) Falls is a froth of white water best seen just after the monsoon, when the hills are at their greenest.

Tour a working coffee estate

You can't visit the birthplace of Indian coffee and not see how it's grown. A plantation walk reveals the rhythm of the estate — arabica and robusta under shade trees, pepper vines climbing the trunks, the harvest and the drying yards. Slow mornings at Hirekolale Lake & beyond

For something gentler, Hirekolale Lake sits against a backdrop of hills just outside town — a serene spot for sunset. Wildlife lovers can head toward the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary for safaris in search of elephants, gaur and the occasional tiger. And for sheer views, the Mullayanagiri-Baba Budangiri road and Kemmangundi's viewpoints are hard to beat.

The best time to visit Chikmagalur

September to March is the sweet spot. The post-monsoon months (September–November) leave the hills impossibly green and the waterfalls in full flow, while the winter months (December–February) bring crisp, clear mornings perfect for treks. The monsoon itself (June–August) is dramatic and lush but can make trails slippery and views fickle.

Base yourself on the estate and you wake up inside the scenery rather than driving to it.
